32Red’s 100K+ BadBeat Jackpot
That time has come around again when 32Red’s Badbeat Jackpot has reached the too-big-to-ignore level, having recently passed the magical $100,000 mark. What tends to happen now – rather like the rollover lottery effect – is that the increased interest generates accelerated progress and the subsequent rapidly growing jackpot in turn creates more traffic, the cycle continuing until someone is ‘unlucky’ enough to lose a qualifying hand and pocket their share of a massive payout. If you’re not playing on a Badbeat Jackpot table, then it won’t be you.
Remember that everyone sitting at the table where the Badbeat hand is played receives a share of the Jackpot, even those who fold pre-flop!
In order to qualify for the Jackpot (which is built up through the accumulation of each hand’s one-off contributions), the losing hand must contain Four-of-a Kind, 8′s or better, both hole cards should be included and the hand must go to a showdown (see Terms & Conditions for other information).
It is worth keeping in mind that the Badbeat Jackpot tables will play a little bit differently to normal tables as a pair of eights is a potential Jackpot winner, whereas a pair of sevens is merely a pair of sevens. Consequently players are going to be more willing than usual to get busy with 88 pre-flop in the face of aggression, for example, while suited connectors bring with them the prospect of straight flushes and therefore also take on more significance than would normally be the case.
Good luck at the tables,

Bad Beat Tables – Strategy Adjustments
February 3, 2011 by AngusD
Filed under Angus Dunnington, News, Poker School
In the early days of Britain’s national lottery myself and Mrs D were visiting a friend who tried his luck every week for the life-changing prize. Jumping on the bandwagon, we hurried around Manchester city centre in a last-minute bid to find tickets (surprisingly, we didn’t win, and during the next two decades we have bought one ticket; we didn’t win).
Bad beat jackpots like 32Red‘s also have that lottery feel thanks to the rapidly increasing running total. Indeed as I write this is racing beyond a staggering $475,000.
But this is so much better because we love playing poker anyway and, for a modest additional contribution, are able to continue to play, learn and (hopefully) win money while simultaneously having the bonus of an opportunity to perhaps take a promising hand to the river (showdown) and pocket a hefty sum.
Of course there are various conditions that must be met but, essentially, the important points to remember are that the minimum qualifying losing hand for the Jackpot must contain at least four 8s, the best hand of both the winner and the loser must include both hole cards and the hand must go to a showdown. 70% of the total Jackpot is paid out as winnings (thus giving the next, new Jackpot total a kick-start), with half going to the losing hand (the Bad Beat), a quarter going to the winner of the hand and the rest being split between the other players who actively participated in the hand. So at the moment, for example (at $475,000), the Bad Beat winner would pocket over $166,000, the winner of the hand $83,000 and anyone else involved (just being dealt in and folding is enough!) would share the remaining $83,000! Even when the bonus is just starting the rewards for simply being at the table when the jackpot hits are great, but these numbers are amazing.
The question is: do we play as usual and happily welcome Lady Luck should we be involved in the Jackpot hand, or do we try to concentrate on those hands that have potential to be Bad Beat winners/losers – hands that otherwise we might not make an effort to get involved with? And can we adjust our strategy while we ‘wait’ for our share of the Jackpot?
Clearly, if we are prepared to pay a little extra in the form of our contribution to the Jackpot, then we should make the most of our potential Jackpot hands, which means we will be playing more drawing hands than usual because now the rewards are greater. Consequently on a Bad Beat table it is imperative to try to stay involved in the hand with (any) suited connectors and pocket pairs that are 88 and better. Remember that, statistically, a Bad Beat hand is more likely going to be a straight flush than four-of-a-kind, so make the most of suited connectors.
But we should make a conscious effort to avoid getting carried away in the hunt for the big prize! It is a big (and expensive) mistake when holding a pocket pair to pay way too much by pinning our hopes on finding the other two cards in the pack. Instead of paying through the nose with 88, for instance, on a missed overcards flop, simply fold and wait for better value opportunities to present themselves. The trick is to get maximum Bad Beat opportunities for minimum cost, winning money with sensible play along the way.
With all this in mind, we know exactly how some players are thinking and that the prospect of winning a large amount of money for such a small investment has a detrimental affect on their play. Keep a close eye on how every hand is played out and make those who seem unable to fold ‘Bad Beat‘ hands pay over the odds for their long shot chances. We should be happy to get busy with Bad Beat hands that also have good prospects of actually winning pots, but let go of holdings that could prove expensive. Identify those players who fold all but ‘Bad Beat‘ hands and steal their blinds as we would normally with passive players. It would be great to win the jackpot or find ourselves at the ‘winning’ table, but it is imperative that we approach the game with a view to exploiting others’ poor play – making table and game-specific adjustments are even more important here than is usually the case.
I hope this helps. Good luck at the tables!
