The poker news on 09/09/09 is upbeat, with big winners and positive news, contrary to the doom mongering the auspicious date has generated in the press. We’re all still here, even with the Large Haydron Collider doing weird and wonderful things underneath Switzerland, and poker goes on as normal too. That said, it’s only 19:16 here in Gibraltar…Read on.

Mahrenholz wins GUKPT Cardiff

The GUKPT headed to the Welsh capital Cardiff last weekend and, despite other large events taking place in Europe such as the EPT in Barcelona and the DTD Deepstack, it managed to attract a respectable 120 players for the main event.

UK professional Karl Mahrenholz made the correct choice by heading to Cardiff.  Mahrenholz, part of the ‘Hit Squad’, took the honours and a £38,700 pay day.  He wasn’t the only big name pro’ enjoying the Welsh way of life as WSOP star Jon Kalmar, local pro’ Iwan Jones and Andreas Hoivold all made the final table.

The final nine from Cardiff looked like this:

1st Karl Mahrenholz £38,700
2nd Iwan Jones £24,200
3rd Craig Swotton £17,400
4th Andreas Hoivold £10,800
5th Jon Kalmar £7,800
6th Tristan McDonald £6,000
7th Andreas Papantoniou £4,800
8th James Martin £3,600
9th Daniel Nutt £2,500

Kelly Jackson Keeps it in the Family

Paul Jackson is one of the most recognisable names and faces on the European poker circuit.  The likeable Brummie has tasted success around the world but can still be seen playing the big Omaha game at his local casino, Broadway, in Birmingham.

Now it seems Paul could have some stiff competition on his hands following the latest Ladies Poker event in the Midlands.  His daughter, Kelly, recently won the Ladies tournament at Broadway to take home a £20,000 pay day and a seat into the Grand Final.  Kelly has been playing poker for only a year but, by all accounts, simply ran over the opposition.  The apple certainly didn’t fall far from the Jackson poker tree.

Dwan is no Poker Hall of Famer

Tom ‘Durrrr’ Dwan is recognised as one of the toughest high stakes poker players in the world.  Dwan, famous for his heads up challenges, was short listed for the 2009 Poker Hall of Fame earlier this year.  Now it seems the honour will have to wait as the Governing Council of the Poker Hall of Fame has narrowed their list of nominees further to eliminate Dwan from the running.

“With all due respect to Mr. Dwan, one of the games most exciting young players, he does not currently meet the criteria for Hall of Fame selection. We wish him well and expect he will again be considered once he has ‘stood the test of time,’” said the Poker Hall of Fame Governing Council.

A panel of 15 members of the media will cast their votes before October 2nd to decide on who will be inducted.  The Induction Ceremony will take place on November 7 during the WSOP Main Event Final Table.
