The WSOP 2009 is still drawing the poker world’s eyes to Vegas and to the jaw dropping amounts on offer. John “Large” Kabbaj makes it Bracelet no.3 for the UK at WSOP
British poker players are enjoying one of their best WSOP festivals in history this year. Following bracelet wins by JP Kelly and Roland De Wolfe, earlier in the Series, Londoner John Kabbaj has picked up the third bracelet for the UK in the $10,000 Pot Limit Hold’em event. The win netted Kabbaj $633,335 after making short work of heads up opponent Kirill Gersaimov.
Kabbaj then went on to make the latter stages of the $50,000 H.O.R.S.E event. His 16th place finish there added a further $72,914 to the Kabbaj bankroll.
The H.O.R.S.E tournament is reaching the final stages as we go to press and it is Erik Sagstrom, from Sweden, who leads the final. WSOP bracelet winners Vitaly Lunkin and Ville Wahlbeck are both well positioned to claim more wrist jewellery in the event many professionals claim to be the truest test of a poker player’s ability.
Vinny Price wins GUKPT Summer Series
Meanwhile, back in the UK, some of the smaller circuit events have completed. The GUKPT Summer Series final came to a conclusion last weekend with Vinny Price taking the spoils.
With a large contingent of UK players currently in Las Vegas, an impressive 121 players found the £500 buy-in for the event. Price and Toby Lewis agreed an equal chop of £16,000 for 1st and 2nd places but it was Price that was crowned the eventual winner of the event.
UK circuit regulars Mickey Wernick and Jeff Buffenbarger cashed in 8th and 9th as the chase for European Ranking points continues.
Poker in California expected to be legalised
Reports from various sources suggest poker in California could soon be legalised in America’s most populous state.
Budget shortfalls could result in a u-turn by law makers to allow California residents to play poker online legally. The revenue generated by such a move is estimated at $250 million. More than enough to keep a smile on Arnold Schwarzenegger’s face!
Eastgate donates eco-table
WSOP champion Peter Eastgate is to donate the ecology-friendly poker table used during his Main Event victory.
The table will go to the winner of a silent auction conducted at EGM’s booth at the Poker Palooza, in Las Vegas, on July 2nd – 5th. Eastgate will donate the money raised to a charity which has yet to be revealed but is understood to be close to the generous Dane’s heart.
