Poker News: 17/06/09
It’s been a great week for the Brits at the WSOP 2009 in Las Vegas, and we at 32Red Poker have all the latest poker news. So read on and keep up to date.
British players have hit the bracelet trail at the WSOP and, as we approach the half way stage in the festival, two Brits have already notched up wins for the UK.
Firstly, it was JP Kelly to hit the poker headlines late last week with victory in the $1,500 Pot Limit Hold’em tournament. Kelly’s tournament dry spell came to a spectacular end at The Rio as he took on the likes of Eric Seidel in the closing stages. A power-packed display of aggressive poker saw the youngster steamroller the opposition on his way to glory and a page in the WSOP history books. Kelly’s win was worth $194,434, a fantastic sum for the majority of poker players, but the sweet taste of bracelet glory will likely linger for the Aylesbury professional for the rest of his life.
Just as Kelly’s success was being digested, the UK was celebrating again following news that Roland De Wolfe had taken down the $5,000 Pot Limit Omaha Hi/Lo event. De Wolfe already has an EPT and WPT crown in the bank. The WSOP title makes him a triple-crown winner and, arguably, one of the finest poker players to emerge from Great Britain. De Wolfe, grinning from ear to ear as usual, took $246,616 for his efforts.
British soap opera fans may well remember a character called “Beppe” staring in Eastenders several years ago. “Beppe” was played by the talent actor and now off and online poker player Michael Greco. Why, you may be wondering, are we telling you that fact? Well Michael “Don’t call me Beppe” Greco has just finished an astonishing 3rd in a $1,500 No Limit Hold’em event at the WSOP. Greco is now widely recognised as an extremely talented poker player as well as a true gentleman and his 3rd place in Las Vegas has added $248,855 to his bankroll.
As we go to press news has filtered through of more UK success at The Rio. John Duthie, the man behind the European Poker Tour, has just made the final of the $10,000 No Limit Hold’em Heads Up tournament. Over $650,000 is on the line for first place and few are betting against Duthie taking the spoils. Two other established UK professionals are also putting the Americans to the sword in Vegas right now. Hendon Mobster, Ross Boatman, and Jeff “Jaffacake” Kimber are both in the same Pot Limit Omaha final with good chip stacks. Boatman currently leads the final with 718,000 chips and appears in an ultra-cool, focused mood.
With over half of the WSOP tournaments still to start the UK is set for a glorious year in Las Vegas. We’ll have all the bracelet news, as it happens, here at 32Red Poker.
